Mariners Good Opening Series: Do What Boston Can’t-Win

I didn’t think the Mariners would go undefeated, but winning two of three puts them at 2-1, while the Red Sox are 0-3. That makes the Mariners a better team doesn’t it? It does for this weekend.

Felix opened the 2010 season in Oakland, just as he did Friday night.

In 2010 he walked six in 6.2 innings in Oakland, not looking sharp at all. The Mariners won the game in the 9th inning on a two run single by Casey Kotchman, the Mariners winning 5-3.

That is why it is a mistake to get excited after a few games. In 2010 Kotchman was 2-4 with 4 rbis in the opener. He would soon be a hitless wonder and I do not think he is on anyone’s current roster.

In 2010 after winning the opener, the M’s lost four straight and the season looked bad. So winning the opening series made for nice sailing. But now they head to Texas for a true test playing the Rangers who swept Boston.

The Mariners were aggressive in their first two games, running the bases, forcing the defense to make plays- and the A’s didn’t, making 5 errors opening night and another error and a wild pitch Saturday night. The Mariners made no errors in the two games.

In the third game with Mariners down 3-1 in the seventh and runners at second and third, one out, Ichiro bounced to the pitcher and Figgins whiffed. They also had trouble finding fly balls in the high sky. It was not their day. Nor was it a good day for Lueke and Pauley who stunk up the A’s seventh giving up three hits, three walks, a hit batter and four runs.

Langerhans played centerfield opening night and was 0-5 with four strikeouts. Saunders played center in game two and was 0-3. But Langerhans homered in game three proving miracles never cease to amaze.

It was however, a tough weekend for former Mariner Edgar Martinez. On Saturday Ortiz moved past Martinez to claim the number one spot for all time rbis by a designated hitter and later that night Ichiro surpassed Edgar as Mariners all time hit leader.

On to Texas and another two of three? That would be sweet sailing back to Seattle for home opener Friday against Cleveland. Bedard, Pineda, and Felix will start against Rangers.
