The Mariner roster is closer to being set for opening day with moves made Monday. Final cuts to be made today.
Josh Wilson, who hit better than Adam Kennedy this spring, was released. Kennedy can play all infield positions and is better defensively than Josh. It also causes less confusion with two players who are J. Wilson. Now we know who Jack is.
Pitchers who were non roster players, Jamey Wright-brilliant this spring-and Chris Ray have been called up to 25 man roster so they have made the team, along with Kennedy, also a non-roster player.
Luke French was optioned to Tacoma. I thought he might make long relief, that the Mariners would choose the veteran over Cesar Jimenez., though neither had a good camp. Jimenez was also sent down leaving the Mariners with one lefty, that being Aaron Laffey. Royce Ring is still in the mix for lefties, though he has not had a lot of work.
Josh Bard and Chris Gimenez have been sent to the minor league camp, meaning Miguel Olivo and Adam Moore, to no one’s surprise, are the catchers.
Gimenez can play infield and outfield as well as catch, but the M’s want Chris to work on his hitting.
With Franklin Gutierrez likely to start season on DL with mysterious stomach problems that so far baffle doctors, there is a battle for an outfield spot. Michael Saunders and Ryan Langerhans look to be the outfielders. Since Langerhans was a non-roster invitee, another move must be made on the 40 man roster to give him a spot.
